first belly went great but now I could use some advice Empty first belly went great but now I could use some advice

Hi there,
I am thrilled! bounce
After some time of searching for someone to model for a belly painting, I finally found someone awesome. Not only has she offered to let me paint her again, so that I can get some more material for my portfolio, she has also already spread the word to friends, one of which is a photographer who does maternity shoots and (so excited) is interested in working with me to offer something new to her clients. Very Happy

This is the belly painting I did. (Click on it and you will get the huuuuuuge image)

Now the photographer and friends want to know how much I charge and since I am just building everything up I have not yet made up my mind. Actually, I have been thinking back and forth about pricing but I could really use some advice and help with this.
So my questions are: How much do you charge? Does that include photography? How much would you charge if it is for a photoshoot they have with a professional photographer? Or would you not make a difference there?
Based on my work what do you think it would be worth?
I live in Canada, Ontario and the going rate for facepainting per hour is between 65 and 100 $Can.
Any advice would be greatly appreachiated!
Thanks

I've never done belly painting myself, but I've seen people charge about $70-80 for belly painting alone, and then an extra $30-40 for photography...

I wish I could help more, but I'm hardly an expert at belly painting... Haha

I'm also in Ontario! Smile

My prices are super cheap right now because I'm just starting off. I try to charge $1 per minute for everything I do (face painting, belly painting, tats).

So... I try to aim to finish the belly in 40 minutes, and I charge $40.

I also recently teamed up with a photographer to offer a special package, which we're doing for $60 and splitting the profits. Meaning I only take home $30. But if there's enough demand, we'll raise the prices. No one has ever done belly painting in my city, so it's something completely new... so it'll take time to get people to actually try it. But I'm excited!

I'm pretty sure there's been lots of posts on this in here already. I'd do a search.

I think it depends on how long it takes you and how complicated a design you do more than anything. There are many people that can paint a quick painting that looks great. I take 1-2 hours and like to do a fairly detailed design. I started out at $200 per belly and I included a couple photos that I took. I recommend they pair the sitting up with a pro photography shoot for right afterwards. I'm not a pro photographer, but I have a good camera and backdrop. So they can either take their own photos or bring a photographer. I've since brought my price down to a $100 but they have to come to me for the cheaper rate. If I bring in a pro for them and then bring the rate back up to $200. If I have to travel, I add on for that too.

Thanks for the input.
I most certainly don't want to charge less for one belly than what the going rate for one hour facepainting is arround here. The bellies I did so far, I did for free to get something for my portfolio in order to get started and since I didn't get payed, I took my time doing them. I am estimating that if I am a little more focused I can get the painting and pictures done in about 2- 2 1/2 hours.
And then I am thinking that it will propably be much harder upping my prices than lowering them in the future.
I was also concidering setting my prices and then offering a discount at the beginning. That way I don't have the difficulty of upping them later.
Food for thoughts!

Im at $200 for a belly paint & photoshoot. Im a photog so I do my own pics. That price includes 5 high res images on a disc Smile
If I work with another photographer, I charge $150 for the painting.
Also, If they don't come to me, I charge a travel fee Smile

Thank you Carolyn.
I had a look at your website. I like it.
I will have to keep some of the angles and positions in mind for the photography part. I have only just gotten a digital SLR, basically because I had a bad experience with another potographer and ended up not having a single decent picture of a whole day of bodypainting (3 models).
I am in no way a professional photographer but I am willing to learn and this way I will at least be able to have some decent pictures of my work and quite francly, I cannot always hire a professional photographer.
Thank you very much for giving me an idea about what you charge and what you offer. It helps me a lot in evaluating my own work and figuring out where I fit in when it comes to quality and pricing.

Yes, sadly I learned the hard way with other photographers as well. Did some painting & relyed on them to get the photos...then their images didnt turn out so great or I didnt get the high res images I was promised, having to resort to copying & pasting off a low res facebook pic Sad
Its in my contract now that I will ALWAYS take photos of my own work even if it is for another photog & also I reserve the right to post pics of my own work on my website & my facebook page. I am always courteous & wait for the other photogs pics to be posted first though Smile

I can't stress enough in this industry for us all to learn how to work our cameras & take LOTS of photos of our own work! take 100 if you can!! you will then always have at least one, tack sharp, clear photo to throw your logo & watermark onto Smile
After all.. we put a lot of effort into our art work... Its so sad its so temporary... Crying or Very sad
photos are all we have the next day sunny

I start at $60 & go up from there depending on how intricate the design is. I let the photographer set their own prices.
