Menu Board Empty Menu Board

Post by Fabtastic Tue May 03, 2011 9:58 pm

Okay, so last year I was using just a word list for a menu board (pics in my gallery). But this year I thought that I would start to put together a photo menu board of popular/standard designs, so I've been painting my practice head with different designs. Which, I have learned, I really hate - it is just soooo NOT like painting on a person! Not to mention that her vacant stare is a little creepy. But, anyway, here's the first part of my new menu board. I tried to keep all the designs simple, I figure I can dress them up if I have time but I can't dress them down once the kid has chosen what they want! I know that I need to re-do the tiger, that one is from last year and I've improved on it a lot, but other than that I'm fairly pleased with these for now.

Please, give me suggestions, critiques, ideas!! I want to paint more of these "standards" but I can't decide what designs to do.

Something tribal or abstract, something a little gothy if you have those clients ever, a floral crown, a dragon, Iron Man (or other super heros). At least those are the popular ones I've come up against.

Did you paint your practice head iris/pupil in? Mine are just blank flesh tone and that creeps out everyone, but paints wash off when I clean it.

I really like your menu board - it's very clear and beautifully done!

Some additional suggestions from what I remember I used to get asked for quite often:
skull/skeleton, batman, pirate, witch (or zombie/demon etc.)

It's clear, "fresh" and very well done I think.

I would have an option for boys that doesn't go over the eyes.. sometimes they (especially) don't like that.

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone! I am going to start on my next set tonight, will try some of those. Keep 'em coming! Very Happy I'm not sure why but I'm blanking on a boy design that doesn't go over the eyes!! I was going to do the pirate but that has an eye patch. Hmmm...

Lynnie, my head had the eyes already painted on. It's not a proper practice head, it's actually from my daughter's cosmetology class, she practiced hairstyles with it. It has light blush and lipstick already on it too, it's kind of pretty actually. But apparently very creepy when my husband walks into the bathroom and sees a head sitting in the tub! affraid

a snake around their face or the T-Rex that goes on their mouth don't touch the eyes... another popular one for me is a shark that goes either on their mouth or on their hand

Are you doing different price ranges? Maybe smaller stuff you can charge less for.

I like your display a lot... I like the uniformity of using the head for all the designs!

And futher suggestions I would make are repeating what others have already said:

Skull
Zombie (half skull with blood!)
Bat Mask
Talking Dino/Shark
Cheetah
Unicorn (either brow or cheek)

I likethe consistancy of the practice head too... It means you don't have to worry about only having a girl model but needing to paint boy designs

Thanks for the feedback, I wasn't sure if the blandness of the head made the designs seem...uninteresting. She doesn't have the charm of a cute little kid and as I don't have any kids around, I didn't have much choice so I'm really glad you all think it's good! Very Happy I'm working on another set now.

You've inspired me to do the same thing. The designs are very bright, clean, neat. I just love them and can't wait to start with my own board

Looks very nice. My menu board is 2 corkboards with photos of children that I regularly paint at the market so I change them round when really cant stand to paint it one more time. And the children enjoy looking at themselves. I like to do variations on what I paint.

I think you did a great job! And your mannequin isn't nearly as creepy as i would have thought before viewing the pictures... I mean that in a good way. The only thing I can put my finger on is that her pupils are painted a smidge low so she looks like she's wide eyed staring down, if you used some black fp to just raise the pupil a few hairs it would soften her gaze considerably.

She looks like she's in great condition though and along with your clean and wonderful work it just looks crisp and bright.

I would work on some of the other faces mentioned above because you clearly have these down in the comments but overall, very nice!
