Newbie from AL!
Hi! I'm somewhat new to face painting and would LOVE any tips on promoting my business and pricing. I have done about 5 parties and 2 medium sized events (for around here) with really good feedback. My 2 youngest children attend preschool and after handing out cards, etc...I have gotten a few more bookings. But, the big events here are dominated by "who you know" to get in. I had a full line all day at one of my events, but only ended up making about $20/hr. after expenses. Is this even worth it? My pricing is probably too low ($3 for half face), but folks here just won't pay much more than that. When I quoted $50/hr. for b'day parties, people have shyed away (I really do feel like I am worth that, although new to FP, I have an art background and practice a lot). How is the best way to promote corporate events? We live in a small town (25,000) right next to a University town (Auburn...War Eagle!) and the university events are impossible to get in without paying an arm and a leg (need those!). Help!!!!

Re: Newbie from AL!
Hi there and welcome. You will find most everything you need to know on this forum. There are many threads about business. Don't sell your self short. I rarely do anything for less than $5 each. Unless I have a $2 special on a simple cheek design for the day. People will just as easily lay down $5 as they will $3.
$50 an hr is a bargain. You will always have people that want you for nothing and will shy away when they hear price. But set your price, know it, and be firm and confident. No wishy washyness in your voice when quoting.
Be patient ,the bookings will come once word of mouth gets around. Make sure to always have business cards at your events. Most parents at parties, understand you are not there for free and would love to have you at their child's party too. Oh and contact that University! I have been hired by our local University and they have repeating gigs for me. They have sibling day for the students and their sibs, halloween dances, Easter egg hunts! the activities go on, be sure to mention to them what a fun and interesting asset you would be at these kind of things. God Bless!
