Far out, how terrifying!!

I only really started painting less than a month ago but I'm excited to get into it! I approached a guy a month back asking if he'd consider taking me on, when he said no I decided to build up my own little company to see what came from it - a couple of weeks back he got back in touch saying he'd like to contract me for his jobs. ohhhh I hope it goes well What a Face

Haha not until the 17th of July Smile I'm headed off on holiday (yay!) before then so had to turn down one sooner.

The guy's asked me to spend 4 hours painting for his website (probably before my first gig) which is a bit scary - I'm happy painting away at home taking my time but not so sure I can make website quality pics quickly... we shall see I suppose.

Congrats SEZnz!
Sorry maybe I misunderstood, why are you painting for his website?
He's not a face painter is he?
I don't like the idea of people using your work to advertise their business unless of course they have nothing to do with face painting.
Occasionally I work for another face painting company, and I hand out their cards and I can't take any pictures of the work for my site, but yet they can use my work for their site..... not happy. So now I only do it when i have no bookings for 2 weeks - as it turns out i haven't done a gig for them in over 2 months.
It's hard when your starting out and you don't have the confidence yet.
Good luck, I know you can do it your a quality painter.

hey Tash,

He's not no - he's a clown and focuses on that side of things but is promoting face painters - if effect trying to corner the market. (see www.cornflake.co.nz)

At this point I think I could do with his help as he's getting me jobs that aren't coming in of their own accord - kind of sounds like what you were doing, the main difference being that he's also wanting to employ me for a few hours with the main goal of putting photos on the site.

thanks for the congrats and the advice Smile knowing more details does this still sound a bit off?

He probably just wants to show off what you can do, if you are the one people are hiring through him. Ask him if the photos will just be on his site while you are working for him.
If he is paying for your time to do the faces for the photos he may be able to retain "creative control" of them, sort of like in my other life I can retain rights to my articles I write as a freelancer but if I'm being paid by the paper by the hour I lose the control of the creative property.

Very good point - he's wanting to pay me with the sole purpose of using the photos on the website so I think it's probably fair that he will 'own' them as such, would you agree?

He should do a profile of his face painters with a gallery of stuff they can do. This way everyone will know the pics you do are yours kinda like:

SEZnz,
It's probably fine, unfortunatly when you are just starting out and you are good at what you do people can tend to take advantage - I have learned this the hard way. Just ask him to credit the work to you on his site.
Should sort out any problems - or watermark them before you give them to him.
I'm sure he has just thought it would help both of you, and has nothing untoward in mind - never hurts to keep your wits about you!
Good Luck and share the finished results with us if you please!

yahoo, all done Smile I don't think I have any ownership over the photos but that's fine - at the end of the day, he was the one paying me to paint. I'll put links up once they're up on his site.

went pretty well - some designs i was really happy with - did a couple of cute butterflies and was surprisingly pleased with my skull/monster thing. i found some kids to be wriggly (and those ones drove me crazy - final paintings on those kids were really average!) but most of them sat really still which surprised me Smile

all in all, i'm pleased bounce
