darth maul???
ok i have a whole darth maul face painting job this sat. He wants his whole head face neck and chest done. darth maul has 8 horns . has any1 got any tips on how to make the horns look 3D???
Re: darth maul???
If I were going to be that elaborate over it and it was saturday i would go out and get some play doh and shape some horns, leave them out to dry and then glue them to his head.
Here is my fiance...lol

Crayola Model Magic... wonderful stuff. It dries lighter than styrofoam, is stark white, you can paint it... I used it to create the teeth and horns for this guy. And way less expensive that effects products or prosthetics.
That is what I would do rather than trying to paint 3D horns.
You can attach to skin with liquid latex or any skin safe adhesive.

Lentils and split peas... and cornmeal inside the hood. Took about 60 hours of construction... The back of hood has a pattern on it.

Re: darth maul???
There is a white air drying clay you can buy here in OZ called "DAS". They usually keep it in craft store where they keep the FIMO.
I would get a bald cap and glue them on..... unless he is hairless himself and then i would just glue them with eye lash glue or glitter tat glue.
Another way to go is get him to or you contact a costume shop near you, they usually have the whole costume and sometimes just the head piece, so you can match the makeup to it.
Here 's mine....didn't have to do the whole head though.

I would use modeling clay to form the horns and then attach them with liguid latex or spirit glue. You could also try a local costume shop or goth store, they often carry fake horns.
Re: darth maul???
thanx every1 for the help! we have tried heaps of costumes shops and they just dont seem to have any in our local area in sth aust( sigh) love the play doh idea as i am always making it for my kids so the ingredients are readily available, i did think about styling them out of Styrofoam lol. will let you know how i go!
Re: darth maul???
ps. he is shaving his head for this as well. can't say he isn't devoted to it.. plus now several of his mates have asked me to do them to. maybe i will send some of my cards off with them and hope some work comes out of it

But we've only just met!!
BTW...I actually intended to paint over the legumes in the original concept but, thought... what the heck, they are lizard/snake coloured naturally!! And it reduced the work required. Rhat photo was just the head... he is painted/sfx'd from the waist up...
Oh... as for breathing.. the piece was two parts, the hood and cap were separate from the jaw and throat, so his nose is just under the tip of the hood and clear for breathing.

You're getting there. If you are painting the horns... try to make the base look a bit more like the original...see the texture of the "sprouting" ring around the base - it is a different colour and rough, and add some texture to the horns to make them appear to have some ridges running vertically which will add some dimension.

Don't be so down on yourself. It looks great. We all started at the begining and we all progress as we go.
My attitude is that I will never be a Wolfe brother or even close to it. But I like the work I do and the kids and parents I work for love it. When I feel I want to learn something I take a class or practice what I have seen. I don't feel the pressure to become one of the greats if I see something on here or at a convention. I just didn't get into this biz to be stressed about about the other 75% who are better than me.
We are truley lucky to do what we do and to work with the people and materials we do so just keep a positive outlook and enjoy yourself.

Re: darth maul???
I was painting today at a Soccer Tournament and one boy sits down and says he want to be Darth Maul....
ACK!!!
I have NEVER ever been asked to paint Darth Maul!!!!
No photo handy... couldn't for the life of me remember anything except the placement of the horns (yes I painted them!)
Looked nothing like the real Darth but the kid was happy... Told him it was Darth's cousin Barth Maul...

BUhahahahha. Barth Maul??
Do you have an ipod touch? Clayton (Marvelous Masks) had a great idea about putting a ton of photos on his ipod for such an instant as this. We were painting together last weekend, and a kid sat down and wanted to be a wolf. Clayton was able to pull a wolf painting up on his ipod (of course, this was the kid that ran away without paying too...grumble grumble)
