Ooh, exciting stuff - I love Mark Reid's work. Smile I'm off to Paintopia for 4 days in May and there are some great workshops on there. Can't wait!

This is all too much fun! Just did this one whilst sitting in bed with Matt. I think it slightly freaked him out. Oops. Very Happy

Wow- I have a small SFX kit, obviously I need to practice more- yours is amazing. I want to do this to my hand before painting next halloween. That would be cool.

Monna - I put a roll of derma wax between my thumb and forefinger joints, down onto my hand, blended it into the skin then built it up a little at the top so that it was flush with the joint but just higher than my actual skin surface. This meant I could cut into it and make it look like an open 3-D wound at the top. Smile

After that, I gently opened up the "wound" with a slightly oiled derma wax tool, before filling it with blood paste. Some cake blood and syrup-type blood later and it looked like the photo. Oh, and a slight wash of very watery red paint around the area to make it look sore and inflamed.

I'm really glad you like it. Smile

Valerie - eep! Sorry! Very Happy

That would be very cool, especially as if you used a non-drying blood syrup, the wound would kind of move and seem to ooze a bit as you painted. Very Happy I was doing this earlier and that's what freaked Matt out. Ahem.

This isn't difficult, so I'm sure you could do it really well. I've only been doing SFX for 4 days, after all! Smile

Erica - no latex used in this! It's just a little derma wax, fake blood and face paint! Very Happy Play with the gory stuff, you know you want to. Join us on the dark sideeeee. Wink

Paola - nooooo! My friend got me a 4-day festival ticket (all accommodation, workshops, food and drink included) to Paintopia, in May. Big gift, eh??

The interest in gore and SFX came from a jam I was at on Monday, where one of the attendees ran a 15-minute demo of derma wax and various theatrical blood products. Got hooked, taught myself more, been practising ever since. Very Happy

Sorry if the stuff makes you feel faint! I don't mean to upset anyone. Smile

It really IS fun! I'd hate to think anyone was hurting - I'm a real hippychick type like that - but making effects that simulate nasty boo-boos is just fantastically addictive. Very Happy

I just had a call from the place I ordered my SFX stuff from, and it's in the post after a stock delay. Should be getting latex, gelafix, film blood and barrier spray (plus some metallic powders for the Paintopia competition) arriving tomorrow! Yayyyy! Very Happy

All the stuff I've posted uses only derma wax, fake blood and face paint, Krissiemarie, so it's not a huge outlay to play around with it. Smile

My latex, Gelafix, barrier spray and other things finally arrived yesterday, so I've been having a play. Smile Here's the burn effect I did this afternoon, while Cian was out at nursery. There are a couple of things I'll do differently next time, but I'm fairly happy with it for a first try:
