I don't have anything to contribute on this particular subject, never having used an IUD...but I just wanted you to know I'm paying attention. Very Happy

Well, I have the mirena, and have no troubles with it. For me it is working great! This is the second one I have.

Do you have trouble with it? Or are you considering it?

Personally I have used multiple versions of the pill and mini pill. I have also used the depo shot, and the nuva ring. I have now gotten my tubes tied as I recently had a procedure that would leave it unlikely that I would carry to term. For the record the nuva ring was my preference.

I have never had an IUD though had many conversations about them. I had actually been considering it prior to my tubes being tied. Most of the women I know that have had one had complaints. Over half ended up with infections when it was placed, many said it caused discomfort during intercourse. Even more of their other halves apparently could feel it during intercourse as well. I have known a couple that ended up pregnant anyways too, though this is a risk for any birth control. Of those that kept them the complaints after about 6 months were very few.

With the first Mirena, my husband could feel the wires to, but our doctor cut the wires shorter and after that he didn't feel them anymore.
I think it is different for each person how the body reacts to it.
For me when I was young I took the pill. Between the two pregnancies I took the pill as well.
After the birth of our second child my husband shouted that we were done now, but I was not so sure. I didn't want to take the pill anymore. The Mirena sounded as the best option to me. For 5 years I'd be safe without having to think about it everyday. I always kept hoping my husband would have a change of heart. Very Happy my periods are hardly mentionable while with the pill they were very heavy and long (a full week) What a Face

Anyway after the first period of 5 years, I accepted that there won't be a third child and I am fine with it now. But tying my tubes is still a step to far for me. I like it, that I never have to worry about my periods, so again I am having the Mirena. And when this term of 5 years is up...

Well.... we will see then what to do...

I didn't get on with the mini-pill or the depo shot (so much bleeding!!!), so I'm currently reassessing my options and considering the Mirena. I'm following this thread closely!

I'm too old for it, lol, but my daughter tried it for a long time, tried to wait of the side effects. Doc said they would go away, but they never did. She had VERY frequent periods, like every two weeks and heavier. She tried it twice, and finally gave up with the side effects.

Please be aware of the potential for the problems with device placement even when done by competent physicians. Protrusion of the device through the uterine wall can require laparoscopic removal. Have seen this happen multiple times. It is a recognized issue. That being said...my daughter uses the Mirena without problem thus far.

Post by A New Face Wed Dec 26, 2012 4:03 pm

I have been having irregular periods since insertion 18 or so months ago. Nothing to abnormal but with in the last 2 weeks I have had terrible head aches, fatigue, mood swings, bloating, and to top it off I started lactating and having severe cramps on Christmas confused . So weird right. I have made an appointment to see my Doc Friday and I really don't have alot of friends with IUD's so I spend more time on here and figured I would ask you ladies, thanks for the feedback.

I had the Depo shot for my 1st birth control and I litterally had a split personallity that lastest until a year later when I finally figured out what was going on. I loved not having a period, but seriously, mental health is WAY more important--since then I am too scared to try any thing not "natural"
Good luck!

I have the Paraguard and, from what I can tell, it causes fewer side effects han the Mirena. Yes, the Paraguard can cause heavier/longer periods, but it doesn't have any hormones. Things like bloating and moodswings are caused by hormones. All of the doctors I talked to said they'd use/have their wife use the Paraguard.

It's good you're going to the doctor. I know you don't want to think about this, but your symptoms could be due to pregnancy. Let us know how it goes.

Not Preggo, Mirena is fine, but I may have had spontaneous Cyst implant and rupture, which is like a miscarriage without fertilization scratch Or I have a pituitary tumor, which sounds scarier than it is. Crying or Very sad I won't know for sure until Monday when some blood work comes back.
