dealing with bangs
Most of the fp I have done for events has been cheek art. I have been practicing full face designs on my daughter, her friends and my friends and did fp at a room party at a convention where I did full face designs on adults.
This friday I have a school dance for 5th graders. More of school social with music. I am working for free, because I am the fund raising coordinator for this school.
But lots of these kids have bangs. The boys' hair is short enough that I can spritz it with water to get it out of the way for a full face design, but the girl's will want their hair to still look pretty afterwards. I bought some elastic headbands at the dollar store for $1 for 15. I am assuming that if I use these, I will just have to let the girls take them home with them so I don't reuse them. But can anyone recommend something a bit better, that doesn't involve me buying new stuff for each and every event?

Re: dealing with bangs
At the dollar store they have like 30 little clips for $1.00... The ones with bangs get a clippy and get to take it home

Re: dealing with bangs
Sparkly bobby pins. Pack of 60 for $1 - BUT I spoke to the owner and bought in bulk (6 sets of 12 packs of 60 bobby pins, if that makes sense - 72 packs altogether) and he knocked 10% off. They don't go bad and I know I'll use them, so why not?! See if you can talk to the owner/manager about that.
I used to use the plain black ones (100 for a buck?) but I found that half of them would get left on the table. Now 99% of the time the sparkly pins go home with them, and I'd rather they do that than me having to dump a buttload of black pins in the garbage after every event, even if they are slightly cheaper.

Re: dealing with bangs
Thanks, I will have to look for those bobby pins. I have 30 of the headbands, which should get me through Friday night since it is only 2 hours, and many of the girls seem to wear headbands , barrettes or don't wear bangs. And the bobby pins sound perfect to have around the house when my daughter can't find her barrettes.
Re: dealing with bangs
I've used bobby pins and clips and actually stock both now. I use the bobby pins on boys because they aren't too girly but I like the spring clips for girls because I usually have paint on my hands are a little wet and they are a little easier to use without getting something in the girls hair.
I do the wet hair trick on boys hair too. I put my fingers in their hair first so I don't spray their face. Looks cool if they are getting an animal...sometimes I'll paint their hair a bit. Good tip from Mark Reid.

Re: dealing with bangs
The dollar store has little clips that I pick up when I can. I am going to look for the glittery bobby pins! Cool!
Re: dealing with bangs
Dear bemusedart:
I buy tiny little spring clips (45 for a dollar) at my local dollar store. They are in all kinds of translucent colors and are shaped like flowers, butterflies, stars, ovals, etc.
(I used to live in Garland, Texas. I went to O'Banion Junior High for 8th grade. Loved the weather.)

Re: dealing with bangs
The weather lately has been thunder storms. And we are grateful, considering the droughts we have had the last few years.
Re: dealing with bangs
I just get their mom, dad, friend, or whomever is with them to stand behind my director chair and hold back their bangs. I'll do the forehead area first. By the time I'm finished the paint has dried and they can let the hair back down. It's up to them on how to keep it up. At one festival I helped the hair broach lady get business as they were going to her to buy a pretty barrette to hold it back.
Re: dealing with bangs
My niece, who's been FP'ing for years, clued me in to the dollar store clips for girls & bobby pins for boys. Works great, $ is right & they usually take them out when I'm finished painting. The clips work out for me because the pins don't seem to hold enough off the face for girls. (I seem to fiddle more w/bobby pins)Whatever you use...here's the BEST advice I got. Twist the hair a little along the brow before clipping or pinning. It catches all those loose, short ends!
Re: dealing with bangs
I am a heathen. I reuse. And I am not afraid to admit it.
I bought 48 cheap plastic headbands (they were 12 for a buck). After A kid uses one, it gets thrown down in the bucket with the dirty sponges and gets sanitized when I get home.

Re: dealing with bangs
I never have a problem with bangs... I just push them out of the way with my hand as I paint... Should I not be doing that? :/

Do they just magically stay out of the way after you push them over? I have GOT to learn this trick!!

Re: dealing with bangs
Haha, no. I just hold them there with one hand which steadies the child's head and paint with the other hand.
Re: dealing with bangs
I have white, brown, blonde, and black bobby pins.

Re: dealing with bangs
I use brown and black bobby pins/hair grips which I get from the dollar store for a pack of many.

@Bekahcat
Ohhh yeah I can't do that. I'm a "life and hold" kinda gal. I like to pick up my cakes and hold them when I load my brush, especially my one stokes. I need both hands. Looking at it now, I see that it's not very efficient to do that, but it's what I do.

Re: dealing with bangs
I don't use pins to pull the hair back, i use tidy bit of hair gel to pull the bangs out of the way so when i finish the face, everyone can still see the painted face because i did use pins when i first started but when i have to pull the pins out the hair covers the faces which means you cant see face design. the good thing about hair gel it cheaper then hair pins in the long run. i hope this is another idea for you

Re: dealing with bangs
I don't pull the pins out of the hair. I just tell them to keep them That way the design can still be seen all through the party or event.
