My mechanic, a good friend of mine, suprised me today with the opportunity to paint at the Kansas City annual Greaserama car show THIS weekend. He's friends with the promoter and I get to set up with no booth fee all weekend. While am excited to get a chance to make some money at this event, I am clueless as to what special choices I could have for the children as well as adults. All entries in this event must be pre- 1965 vehicles, cars as well as bikes. They'll have cult movies, live entertainment and more. Although the name sounds 50's, I gather it doesn't really follow that theme.

As a group you all are a wealth of knowledge and inspiration, so I am hoping you might have some ideas for me. The only thing I can think of right now is flames. I am clueless when it comes to motor vehicles or the folks that are into this sort of thing. confused

How are you at copying from a photo? I'd recommend getting a few car books from the library (you know, those coffee table books with all the glossy photos of classic cars) and taking them along for reference.

Kids will want the usual, but you may be able to get adults into it by painting "their" cars on their arms etc.

I hope it goes well! It seems to me that kids get the same old, same old no matter where you are. I worked on my sugar skull hard before I did a Latino Festival, and never did it one time there, did plenty of spidey and tigers!

If you have a tire track stencil, you can do the "i just got run over" face, that might be car related!

I'll see what the library has, luckily it's right across the street form my house!

Love the other ideas, especially the tire track, mud flap girl, and name logos....They've got some kind of logo for the show that looks a lot like Frankenstein. Haven't figured out what that has to do with cars yet, but I could probably copy it.

You guys are awsome, thank you!

I had an event in the city park one day & found out that they were having a cruise in later that evening with singing and other things. I was told I could hang around since I was already set up and paint at the car show. I thought this would be cool. Unfortunately, no one cruised in! LOL No one, not even any one in charge was to be seen, so I packed it up.

I've always wondered about doing a car show. Do let us know how yours turns out. Smile

I do a car show every year, and I have to say it's one of my better events! Believe it or not, I haven't painted 1 car related thing at it yet!!! Kids want the butterflies and spiderman and batman and puppies and all the regular stuff I always paint. The great thing about doing this car show is they don't charge me a fee to set up as long as I donate something, like a free glitter tattoo or something like that. I'll be painting at the car show this Saturday, but there's a chance of scattered showers and temps in the 90's, not so good for painting, so it may just be glitter tattoos and balloons. Have to wait and see.

I do several big car shows a year the kids just pick from by book what they want..not a big deal...every once in a while i get one that wants a car. i do the best i can..or maybe they want a number of their favorite race car driver..I also do cruise nite every tuesdays in the summer from june to sept and the kids just want the usual..what ever you have in your book will be ok..if you can draw then do some easy cars, but I love doing the car shows in our area and i get alot of calls to do more each year..I love them

We have a mini car show every Friday night at a local fast food restaurant down the road. I scoped it out, but noticed not a lot of kids. The restaurant's wanted me to come do PPF(not pay me) but I've declined. I got an offer for a car show w/ a vendor fee, but wasn't sure it'd be a good PPF gig. I emailed back & asked about expected attendance & if they'd have a kid's zone(bounce houses, etc). So far no reply.

I have been wondering the same about car shows, if there are really kids there, and if they would be bored out of their skulls and need something to do, like get a scull on their face! Do most of the car shows you all do have families and kids?

Yeah, I think in the end the parents will just be happy to be able to find something their kid wants to do as car shows can get old fast if you're not big into cars! I'd do the usual and sprinkle in some car designs. Most of the major car brand logos are nice and simple for cheek art. Maybe one of those old antique gas pumps would be cool...the tire tracks are a great idea! You could do a road across the face with a car on the cheek, maybe some road signs (stop sign, curvy road, etc)....a steering wheel...oooh, or a pair of fuzzy dice? ;-) You could of course have the Disney Cars characters too. I think at our last car show they had full size replicas of the Cars characters and the kids loved them!
Good luck and have fun!

I did a car show before. I paid $30 for a booth for face apinting and it was a waste of time if you are trying to make some money. It was more men out there then children. And of course the men werent thinking about no face painting, they were too busy showing off their hot rods. But it was some kids there and I must have made about 30 dollars in an 6hr time frame. I just found myself walking around to other vendors networking and just passing out my card to everyone who looked my way. Good luck.

Yep... It's mostly men(a lot of older men/grandpa age but not with grand kids).

I think that you'd be a big hit if you focused on Traditional Style Tattoo designs & such!

Classic cars = tattooed aging hipsters with greased pompadours & kids (I know scores of them). The kids would LOVE to have a Sailor Jerry or Don Ed Hardy inspired design.

There are also tons of hot rod art out there.
Coop: http://www.coopstuff.com/
Big Daddy Roth (Rat Fink): http://www.ratfink.com

I would LOVE to land a gig like this, classic cars, hot rods, classic bike, HDs, etc. Design-wise, this is my thing & these folks definitely have kids & little boys LOVE cars & motorcycles. In addition, these folks have disposable income. Cars are an expensive hobby.

IMO, with the right design repertoire these kinds of event could be very lucrative & fun. I even think that there is also a possibility of it being conducive to body painting.

My 2 cents!

A very jealous,
