Pros and Cons...
Right, this next fortnight coming I have a massive FP and BT gig its going for seven out of the fourteen days and I will earn around $1700, I am also doing my first belly painting in that time and that's going to be put into the local news paper with all my details, I have started to book jobs of my own and am getting more and more work from other painters. Most weekends I have at least 1 job each day and more often that not, 2 or 3. Now, I'm not just blowing my own trumpet, I want and need the advice of the wonderfully level headed painters on the forum. I think its time for me to branch out and do this full time, that means quitting my steady job of almost 3 years and relying on FPing to cover all my expenses. I only work at my steady job 12 hours a week, I stress about the job for the rest of the week. Also my hubby works so if it all goes pear shaped, I'm not going to be living in a cardboard box somewhere.
So...
Pros and cons:
FP'ing brings in on average $300 a week, give or take - steady job brings in $175 a week after tax.
FP'ing is mostly a weekend thing, this allows me plenty of time with my children - that time is taken up with my steady job.
I love being my own boss - I hate our management team.
I love the new and creative people that I have met FPíng - I love the people I work with on the floor at my steady job.
I have to force myself to save money - I use my tax return each year as a way of saving.
I love bringing smiles to kids faces - I hate getting abused by angry customers.
FP'ing allows me to pick and choose when I work - I have to fight for everyday off, any shift changes and this is a big thing that stresses me out.
So, what do you think. I am all for cartwheeling it out of there, its been playing on my mind for ages. I just want some objective opinions first.
Thanks and big loves xxx

Re: Pros and Cons...
Pros:
you set your own hours
you get to be creative
you get to hang with kids
It's good money for parties & fully paid events compared to the amount of hours you work.
Bellies!!!
Cons:
Work can be inconsistent
There's a dead season, so if this is income you rely on, it may not be reliable.
You give up your weekends with your family.
Sometimes you have to put up with junky jobs, drunks, obnoxious people
Boogers
There's not a lot of weekday work

Re: Pros and Cons...
IF... you can realistically get by on only your husband's income when FP gigs are not available - there are always "dead zones" as I call them
IF... the stress from your other job is causing you to lose sleep, etc.
IF... you want to spend weekday hours with your children
IF... you want to be your own boss and take on all the responsibility for your success (or failure)
IF... you are HAPPIER face painting...
Go for it.
Life's too short to be stressed out over $175 week job when you can do something you love for the same or better...
If it doesn't pan out... you can always find another part-time job.

Re: Pros and Cons...
Sooo...Lemme see if I got this right. You make 300/week ( approx) with fp. You make 175/week at your "real" job.(did you know that j.o.b. stands for "just over broke"? just sayin'..)Thats 125/week MORE with fp than at j.o.b. And your wondering if you should fp full time(well, "full time" as in week-ends) Hmmm... And you LIKE fp.Hmmmm. Go for it!

I'm with Shannon. If your weekday job is stressful for you and you can live off of what you make just facepainting, definitely go for it. You'll have more free time with the family, be less stressed out and happier, and can devote more time to what you love.
Re: Pros and Cons...
If you made all that into a pros/cons sheet the pros side (to quitting the job and going for FP only) would be very heavy. I know there is fear involved when you think about giving up the steady job, but I think it is clouding your judgment. Just from what you've written there's really not a reason to continue with a stressful job like that.
Re: Pros and Cons...
Thanks guys,
I have been slowly angling towards leaving the job for a while (which has been rather liberating) but its a really big decision, its the fear of the unknown. I know that I'm a good face painter, I work hard and put 150% into what I do and I just have to have the self confidence to take this big step. I'll be handing in my notice on Sunday then, eep!
Hears to more time spent doing stuff I like to do with the kids and my lovely hubby....

Hi Sam
You do fantastic work and you are amazing with the kids you paint, I've been lucky enough to see you in action more than once:D I don't think there are any cons you need to worry about, with your talent, drive and determination the only way is up from here. This venture is going to take you to some amazing places and I wish you all the luck in the world.
P.S I am guessing that you're a bit too busy to organise the jam at the moment, would love to catch up with you though!

Re: Pros and Cons...
Hi Sam, I hope you don't mind me posting here since I'm not yet in the buz.
Firstly, i wanted to say congrats on your business doing so well, that's awesome!!
It is def scary to leave a steady job, but if it's something you really don't like and you have something else to do that is already working out great for you, and you think you can get by on hubbies pay in times when maybe there isn't as much work for you... well, leave leave leave!
I recently left an extremely steady job, that paid pretty well, that I had been in for....well, alot longer than 3 years which I was also VERY unhappy in. I felt really apprehensive about leaving, but in my experience, I have NEVER felt better since leaving!!! I wish wish wish I had left alot earlier. I am so much happier and healthier since leaving!
Sounds like you have all bases covered girl.
Handing in your notice on Sunday sounds to me like the best thing to do. How exciting!! I feel really happy for you! Goodluck.

Re: Pros and Cons...
How about this: anything over the first $175 in a week (made by FPing) goes into a special free bank account as "savings" for those weeks that are "dry". And then if this "reserve" accounts gets more than 3 months in it (ie: $175 times 12, whatever that is) you can spend/keep that excess! So, you will build up to the point where you have at least 3 months of your "old" salary to cover you for your tough times. You will at least remain at your current living standard even during the dry times, assuming only 3 months of those
You *can* find free accounts and accounts where money transfers from your computer are quick and easy to make!
This is kinda a Dave Ramsey approach But it should take out some of the fear?
Also, are you marketable enough that you could go back to a $175/wk job if you tried the full-time FP thing and it didn't work out? If so, then don't sweat it - make that move

Re: Pros and Cons...
I had a full time job that paid very well. I still did my art on the side and in the wedding season I had the equivolent of 2 full time jobs and it was killing me slowly. My full time job was highly stressful. I was laid off along with 26 other people. After crunching the numbers, we found that as long as my art pulled in $800 a month averaged out over the year, we could maintain our standard of living and be perfectly fine! It is the slow season and we are still managing to overrun the $800 per month right now. I have made my art a full time job. I research and practice every day. I could NOT be happier!!!!!!!!!
If you have the opportunity to do what you love, and spend quality time with those you love and still have only a slight drop in your standard of living....your QUALITY of life will skyrocket! Life is too short...... Drop the stress and grab success!!!!!
