Sharing designs Empty Sharing designs

I know everyone here seems to share design ideas, which is awesome by the way, but is there a face painters rule about this?? I see so many cool designs online and I'm just not sure about what rules apply to using them. Obviously I would never say one of them is my original idea, but what about doing it and then say posting on my website (which is not quite ready at this point)? I certainly don't want to step on toes, but I haven't been doing this long enough to have many of my own designs yet. Any input appreciated!! Smile

I know for sure that using someone else's picture of a facepainting is a no no
As for your painting based on someone else's design.. I wouldn't think there is an issue.. it takes some people a while to develop their style enough to design.

But i am not one of the veterans, so i am not sure

I'm not that good at making my own designs (except for my wuppies) and I get inspired by Google images or other facepainters.
I never post designs of others, but do copy them, if allowed and post my own version with a Thank you to the original painter!

I would do something simalar (is this written correctly?). I am not good at designing on my own yet, but I'm mostly redoing other people designs I find on the internet or in books. Maybe sometimes with a couple of changes (other colour or linework). So all the real credits go to the pro's!!! Whom I am very grateful for putting an example!!! For a website I woild make sure that you mention wich designs are yours and wich aren't.

I think it would be ok to share the LINK of someone elses work that inspires you but I don't think it is ok to take credit for anything that you haven't yet painted yourself...IMO.

When you are learning, you copy everyone else's designs, and that's okay, it's how we all learn.
You should NOT post any picture that you did not paint yourself.

It's considered a courtesy to post something like "inspired by" when you post your pics to your facebook, for example, but this is not necessary when you use these pics on your board or your company webpage.

That's my $0.02

Thanks for the input everyone.

Julie, I was thinking along those lines...I would certainly NEVER post a pic I didn't paint. Some of the designs I see I know who originated them, but others I don't know if the one I'm looking at is the original, so don't know who to credit. i just want to do this right and not offend anyone.

If you don't know, then you don't know. I don't always post inspired by if it's a design that's been around the block and back. I like to post my inspirations because it gives that person credit and inspires other people to buy their book, take their class, like their page, whatever. It's my way of helping out another artist who has painted something I love.

If somebody is offended you painted "THEIR" design, then maybe they shouldn't share art and keep it to themselves? Wink

I use many designs that I find online as an inspiration and others for a base and add to it. Very Happy
