Fixing bent brush tips
I bent up the tips of a few brushes because I "put 'em away wet" like they say in old westerns. I lay my brushes down in the top part of my FatMax and I forgot to move the rounds on an angle and so they pressed against the side....anyway....
I was going to share how I fixed them. I tried to wrap them but they were so small I couldn't do it so I used my air curler (like a curling iron only with air and bristles instead of a clamp. I heat it up for a few seconds and lay the wet brush against the warm metal and also dragged the brush against it while twisting....they were upright within a few seconds. I put some conditioner on them for giggles and they look great.
I was a very uncomplicated way to fix them. It doesn't use a lot of heat, just enough to set them.

Great tip! May I add that to my article about brushes? I'd be happy to credit you! http://www.squidoo.com/all-about-brushes
Re: Fixing bent brush tips
Do you think it would work for those frayed ends? I've got a few brushes that I love, but some of their twins aren't so pointy.

Re: Fixing bent brush tips
Brushes do fray and start to shed... they really don't last forever. And some go "bad" faster than others... it is time to let go. They are done. Given them an appropriate burial and move on.
Some of the frayed and splayed ones can be used for "scruffy" brushes for creating fur effects and texture... Most of my old #6 round kolinsky sables end up there but one only needs a couple.
It is sad to throw out things you spend money one buy they do not last forever.

Some of these are fairly new. Maybe used 6-8 times. They are my Mark Reid brushes. Most of them are perfect, but 1 or 2 in each size frays or splits. It drives me crazy!

Re: Fixing bent brush tips
CottonKandyClown,
same with my Mark Reid's brushes and they were quite new when they started to split. I put a little bit of conditioner on them after I wash them and roll them trying to make a point. Then I lay them flat to dry.

Sure JZino...that would be great.
I'll do the same thing I do with hair. I clean it really good in case the fraying is actually paint near the ferrule, then I'll condition it (I like the left over hair color conditioner) and then I'll spray a little spray setting lotion in my hand and roll the tips. If they still make a nice sharp tip then they are okay...if they are open after that, then they are repurposed. The flat ones make great rake brushes if you hack them up with scissors.

Re: Fixing bent brush tips
I had same problem recently. I cleaned brushes in veg soap, then rinsed in hot water, shaped the bristles between my fingers then I set them with strong hair gel. Left to dry and then rinsed again gel. good as new
Re: Fixing bent brush tips
It is really hard to guess which brushes will last, different temperatures different uses when painting. I've always cleaned my brushes with soap and water...then rolled the brushes in The Masters (cake) brush cleaner - I'm always amazed at how much colour still comes out of the brush when I do that. Then I give them another quick wash and rinse...and finger pinch the tips/end to the proper shape. If something is splitting etc. I get a coffee cup of BOILING water...dip the brush end into that for a few seconds and then form the tip. It usually works with both bent and split ends...but there does come a point where a) you try to cut back some of the wayward hair to extend the brush life, just use the brush for practice (or to put glue on..) give it to younger kids to play/paint with, use them in the garage to dab on grease to small gears etc., Ive even used ends of old brushes for short dowell (we old people find uses for anything). Give them to a kid's camp for their crafts - or...the final painful act - garbage!

Re: Fixing bent brush tips
ACTUALLY IF YOU PUT THE TIPS OF THE BRUSHES IN BOILING WATER THEY RETURN BACK TO THEIR ORIGINAL SHAPE HOLD THERE FOR AROUND 30 SECINDS AND STAND UP TO DRY AND VOILA.
JUST THE TIPS.
JUST THE TIPS.
Re: Fixing bent brush tips
Stray hairs can be snipped away with nails clippers right down by the ferrule.
Most painters (decorative, not face paint) that I know keep all our brushes. That is because brushes that may seem useless for their intended strokes can often perform a unique stroke once they acquire a different shape.

Re: Fixing bent brush tips
I had some brushes like this. I was looking around my kitchen for something to make them hold a shape overnight. Then I saw the honey sitting on my counter! It's super sticky! I put a little in the palm of my hand, dipped the brush in and smoothed the bristles with my fingers, just took a sec. Next morning I just used a little mild soap to wash out the honey, the brushes were good as new!
Re: Fixing bent brush tips
My friend uses Masters. I wash w/any liquid soap then use Murphy's Oil Soap & shape, lay flat to dry.
